JEE Main is one of the most important national-level entrance examinations for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate engineering programs in India. The exam serves as the gateway for admission to prestigious institutions such as National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), and several other government and private engineering colleges.

Admission to these institutes is based on a combination of performance in the Class 12 (or equivalent) board examination and the candidate’s score in JEE Main.

JEE Main also acts as the qualifying examination for JEE Advanced, which is required for students seeking admission into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Several states and institutions across India also use JEE Main scores for their engineering admissions, making it one of the most significant entrance examinations for engineering aspirants.

Eligibility to Appear for JEE Main

Students planning to take the JEE Main examination must meet certain eligibility conditions set by the examination authorities.

Age Criteria

Candidates must satisfy the age requirements specified by the examination authorities. Age relaxation is generally provided for candidates belonging to reserved categories such as SC, ST, and Persons with Disabilities (PwD).

Qualifying Examination

Students who have completed Class 12 (or an equivalent qualifying examination) with subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics are eligible to apply. Students appearing for their Class 12 examinations in the current academic year are also permitted to take the exam.

Number of Subjects

Candidates should have studied at least five subjects in their qualifying examination to be considered eligible for the JEE Main examination.

Number of Attempts

Students are typically allowed up to three attempts to appear for JEE Main.

Important Note for Candidates

Qualifying in JEE Main and securing an All India Rank does not automatically guarantee admission to engineering institutions. Candidates must also meet the specific eligibility requirements and admission criteria set by individual institutes and participating states.

Students who wish to appear for JEE Advanced must first qualify in JEE Main and meet the additional eligibility criteria prescribed for the advanced examination.

Qualifying Examinations Accepted

Students who have completed any of the following recognized examinations are generally eligible to appear for JEE Main:

  • Class 12 examination conducted by recognized central or state education boards

  • Intermediate or Pre-University examinations from recognized boards or universities

  • Senior Secondary examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)

  • Equivalent international examinations recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU)

  • Other approved examinations considered equivalent to the 10+2 education system
